Sex and Lies
The Moroccan-born writer of Lullaby returns to north Africa to explore sex, pornography and hypocrisy. It was translated into English last year to mixed reviews: readers found it flat, joyless; even those who liked it thought it uncomfortable, while some French journalists expressed surprise that a Moroccan-born woman would write such a book. In Morocco, where Slimani grew up, the penal code lays down imprisonment of up to a year for anyone engaging in sex before marriage, up to two years for adultery, and up to three for homosexual acts.
