Last year, my husband Les called to say he needed to move to Berlin for work and asked me to join him. Fast forward two entire weeks, and we were living in Germany. A couple of months into our new German life, Les suggested we go to a sauna. My excitement turned to disbelief when I found out that in Germany you have to be completely naked to go into a sauna. You see, Germans take saunas very seriously.
The naked truth: is naturism dying out in Germany?
The practice of FKK — being naked in nature — has declined because of a new nudity taboo. But some groups report a rise in membership. F or decades Germans have extolled the benefits of free body culture — or being naked in nature.
It endorses a naturistic approach to sports and community living. Behind that is the joy of the experience of nature or also of being nude itself, without direct relationship to sexuality. The followers of this culture are called traditional naturists , FKK'ler, or nudists. The German nudist movement was the first worldwide and marked the start of an increased acceptance of public nudity in Germany.
